Do you need digital markers from stimuli presentation software?

Yes - we need markers with precise timing.
No - we don't deliever stimuli or are fine with manual keypress markers.
Common stimuli presentation software is ePrime, Presentation, Superlab, PsychoPy, VR engine scripts etc.

Are your measurements taking place inside an MRI scanner?

Yes

Do you plan to do Heart Rate Variability? (stress)

Yes

Typically done to index parasymphatetic nervous system, sometimes in relation to sympathetic. As the HRV is driven by respiration, the respiratory pattern influences how the ANS modulates the heart rate. For this reason we always recommend also recording respiration together with ECG for HRV, so that you have the possibility to control for respiration. Do you want to measure skin conductance? (stress)

Yes

Used to measure the symphatetic nervous system. There exists several measures, skin conductance level, specific and frequency of non-specific skin condutance responses, and variability measures. See Fysiologi applikationsexempel / Hudkonduktans

Do you want to measure facial EMG? (emotions)

Yes

Facial muscle activity reflect emotional states. Different muscle activations correspond to different emotions.

Do you want to distinguish challenge from threat? (positive/negative stress)

Yes

Both challenge and threat give rise to sympathetic activation and increased heart rate, but threat gives higher release of cortisol, which increases systemic vascular resistance (SVR). SVR is therefore a key parameter to score when you need to distinguish between challenge and threat states. Its variation can be measured by analyzing the morphology of a continuous blood pressure signal. See Fysiologi applikationsexempel / Utmaning och hot med SVR/

Do you need pain delivery via electrical shock?

Yes

Used to deliver pain stimuli in different paradigms. Normally, the shock is adjusted for each person so that it is moderately painful, but not too uncomfortable.

What type of electrical shock do you want to deliver?

Basic shock for pain, no detailed requirements.
We need to control the voltage in the stimuli.
We need to control the current in the stimuli.
Whe need to control the exact mathematical shape of the stimuli pulse.

We have several types of stimulators and this information helps us to give you the right suggestions. When you regulate the power of an electric shock, you either regulate the voltage, or the current.

How do you need to control exactly when shocks are given?

From our external stimuli-presentation software.
Manually via software/click.
At predetermined times, no external or manual control required.

Do you need pain delivery via heat/cold shock?

Yes

For studies where you study thermoreceptors for pain.

One day workshop focusing on practical applications of physiological measurements, with a special emphasis on experiments made in VR. Fredrik Rådebjörk from JoR AB offers an agenda with live experiments, demonstrations and inspiration for both new and experienced users. He also demonstrates a new fNIRS system based on an exo-skeleton instead of a cap, which is also VR-compatible.
